ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – The man convicted of taking the life of a Drury Inn manager in January 2015 will spend the remainder of his own life behind bars.

Joseph Bowens was given a life sentence Tuesday afternoon. In April, he was convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of Scott Knopfel.

Knopfel was 50.

Prosecutors said Bowens was buzzed into the lobby of the Drury Inn on Hampton at Interstate 44 in the early morning hours of January 15, 2015. He began speaking to the night manager, Knopfel, then pulled a gun. The pair struggled and Knopfel was eventually shot and killed.

Bowens was arrested days later in Poplar Bluff on outstanding drug possession charges and a failure to appear in court for running a stop sign.
