CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI) – St. Louis Premium Outlets center in Chesterfield is the area’s newest Storm Ready location.

The outlet is one of more than 200 owned by parent company Simon Property Group that have all now been designated as Storm Ready by the National Weather Service.

You need only look back to the historic Joplin tornado of 2011 to be reminded that shopping centers and department stores can be some of the most dangerous places during severe weather. However, there are steps that can be taken to lower the risk – steps the owners of St. Louis Premium Outlet have worked hard to complete.

They now have two trained spotters on staff who’ll communicate with the National Weather Service during severe weather. They are also part of a 24 hour information network that provides weather warnings that are all passed down to shoppers and tenants when necessary.

The communications framework has also been enhanced according to Liz Harry of St. Louis Premium Outlet.

“We have communication infrastructure in place so we can communicate both in and out of the stores to all the shoppers as well as the tenants,” she said. “We are able to direct them to safer spaces on property.”

Those safer spaces are now labeled as designated severe weather shelters so customers can quickly move to safety if it becomes necessary.

“Simon has long been a leader in emergency preparedness and this validates the depth of our commitment to emergency planning,” Harry said.

Shoppers we talked too love the peace of mind being Storm Ready brings.

“It definitely makes me feel like I can come out when I know there is going to be a storm and still shop...and know I can go somewhere safe. That’s a good feeling,” said Danielle Landewe, who frequently shops there.
