ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) - A vigil held Thursday for Tyra Shannon and her 16-year old son Lawrence Strawbridge as new details emerge about the family member charged with their death.

Tyra and Lawrence were found stabbed to death in their home August 2. Darquise Gowdy, Tyra’s son and Lawrence’s step-brother, has been charged with the murders.

Court records obtained by our partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch state that Gowdy, 21, suffers from schizophrenia and does not take his medication regularly.

The documents state that Tyra was scared of Gowdy and had a restraining order against him, but friends told Fox 2 that as a mother she never really cut Gowdy out of her life.

The vigil at Christ Temple Family Church was all about remembering Tyra and Lawrence.

In June, Lawrence took a trip to Florida with his best friend David and his family.

David's mother, Melissa, remembers Tyra making sure Lawrence had his Bible, EpiPen, and favorite purple shirt before they left. She said Tyra was a loving mother and Lawrence adored her.

Lawrence was a standout athlete at Lafayette High School and Tyra helped teach pre-K with the St. Louis Public School District.
