ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) - A recently retired St. Charles County K9 Officer passed away Thursday. Officer Arias had just retired a few months ago after a dozen years of service.
The 14-year-old Belgian Malinois dog was recently diagnosed with liver cancer and was euthanized Thursday. Fellow officers gathered at the veterinarian office to pay last respects and bid farewell to their colleague.
The emotional goodbye was also attended by Arias' longtime partner, Officer Brad Penuel.
St. Charles County Police write on their Facebook page:
"It saddens us to report that retired K9 officer Aras died today from health complications. Aras, a Belgian Malinois, dedicated 12 years of service and friendship to us. He was trained in narcotics detection and tracking, and is credited with assisting with numerous arrests and seizures.
Following his retirement, Aras resided with his handler, Officer Brandon Penuel, as a family pet.
“He was an amazing worker and a great addition to our family,” said Penuel. “We will definitely miss him.”
Aras died with Officer Penuel and a gathering of family and friends by his side. He was 14-years-old."
