ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- After ten years, the much loved musical Aida returns to the Muny stage this week to close the 2016 season. Set in ancient Egypt, Aida is a saga of forbidden love between an Ethiopian princess and her Egyptian captor.

Starring in the title role, is actress and singer Michelle Williams, perhaps best known for being one-third of pop super group, Destiny's Child.  Williams made her theatrical stage debut in 2003 playing the role of Aida on Broadway. She has since appeared in productions of The Color Purple, Chicago and Fela!.

Broadway star Heather Headley, who headlined Into the Woods at the Muny in 2015,  won the Tony Award for Best Actress for the Broadway run of Aida in the late 1990's. She encouraged Williams to come to St. Louis to revisit the role. For more from Williams, read St. Louis Post-Dispatch Music Critic Kevin Johnson's article in Sunday's A&E section.

Aida opens on Monday, August 8 and continues through August 14.
