WARREN COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – Investigators say the Baeird family was heading back home to Warrenton on I-70 near Kansas City when an SUV crashed into their car Monday. Chloe, 7, and Gavin, 13, were killed. Their parents, David and Jennifer, remain hospitalized with serious injuries. Troopers say they were all wearing seat belts.
“They always did things together,” said neighbor Don Brown. Brown said he has lived next to the family for nearly 10 years.”
“Well I watched them both grow up from when they were babies,” said Brown. “They were real good kids.”
The Warren County R-III School District made counselors available for anyone who needed help Tuesday. District Superintendent Jim Chandler said the counselors would be available for as long as anyone needs them.
James Green, 60, of Odessa faces a host of charges including 2 counts of 2nd degree murder. He is also charged with driving while intoxicated and driving with a revoked/suspended license. Green also faces 2 counts of assault for the injuries suffered by the children’s parents.
Investigators believe Green was intoxicated and looking down at his phone just before the crash. Court records indicate Green faced a previous drunk driving charge in 2007 and was given a suspended sentence and placed on probation for 2 years.
