ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - We talked several weeks ago about what would happen if Donald Trump dropped out of the presidential race. The story of, "What would happen if Hillary Clinton dropped out," is now big news across the country.
First off, it should be noted that she says she is feeling fine, after her recent medical issues, including nearly passing out due to pneumonia on Sunday.
But, for a little history, and inside politics, here is what happens. Unlike the presidency the Vice President doesn`t automatically move up the ladder. Neither do the people who finished behind her in the primaries. This all goes back to the party insiders.
The chair of the Democratic National Committee, currently Donna Brazile, could call a special meeting, and fill the vacancy by a majority vote of those present. The new nominee would then decide to keep the VP choice or pick someone entirely new.
A scenario like this is even more tricky if absentee ballots have already been mailed out and a name is already on those ballots. The voters would then be voting on a name knowing they are voting for the replacement person.
In our 228-year history of doing elections in the United States, this has never happened due to health reasons.
