For second straight week, weather forces Kirkwood to change start of football game

ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Friday night lights are a community tradition, but the high school football season in St. Louis has been dampened by Friday night downpours.

“We’ve had to change some schedule times,” said Kirkwood High School Principal Mike Havener.

Kirkwood moved last week’s home game up to 4:30 p.m. in order to beat the weather. The school tried to do the same thing this Friday, but lightning delayed the start of the game.

“The ultimate decision is student safety,” Havener said.

There are also other factors.

“Last week, we had the ACT on Saturday, so we really wanted to try and get the game in on Friday,” Havener said.

Kirkwood is also hosting its annual Greentree Festival this weekend. A concert scheduled for Friday was moved inside the community center because of weather. Events on Saturday will be delayed by one hour to allow time for the rain to move out of the area.
