There are two changes you need to know about as the flu season approaches. Dan Gray reports in this edition of the SSM Health Medical Minute.
Flu Mist is no longer being offered for children. According to the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the nasal spray vaccine – marketed under the name FluMist - did not protect against certain strains of the flu that were most prominent the past three seasons. The nasal vaccine's effectiveness among children 2-17 was 3 percent last year; the injected vaccine had an effectiveness rate of 63 percent.
Dr. Anna Christina Fernandez, SSM Health Family Physician says the two main changes in this year’s flu vaccinations include FluMist is no longer offered, instead only the injected vaccine, and also, people with egg allergies should get a flu shot. It was previously thought people suffering from egg allergies should avoid flu shots.
SSM Health is providing six FREE flu clinics on Saturday, October 8th throughout the St. Louis region, in an annual effort to reduce influenza risk for children, adults and their families.
Annual flu vaccinations are important as it is thought more than fifty-percent of hospitalizations for flu-related pneumonia could be prevented – yet fewer than 50-percent of Americans get the flu vaccine.
A drive-thru clinic will allow those ages 6 months and above to get a flu shot without even getting out of the car. Click here for details.

Flu shots will be given on a first come first serve basis and are available while supplies last.
