Holliday Hits Emotional Pinch HR in Cards Win over Pirates

On the same day that the Cardinals announced they would probably not be picking up Matt Holliday’s 17 million dollar contract option for next year, Holliday hit a pinch home run. The blast in the seventh inning was Holliday’s 20th home run of the season, helping the Cardinals to a 7-0 win and keeping their playoff hopes alive. Holliday has been out for several weeks since breaking his thumb after being hit by a pitch. When Holliday learned that his option probably wouldn’t be picked up, he asked Cardinals GM John Mozeliak to activate him off the disabled list. Mozeliak granted Holliday’s request so Cardinals fans could give the slugger a nice reception if indeed this would be Holliday’s final days with the Cardinals. Holliday provided another signature moment of the season and his Cardinals career when he hit the pinch hit home run.

Jedd Gyorko and Brandon Moss also homered in the 7-0 win. Carlos Martinez pitched seven shutout innings to win his 16th game of the 2016 season.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was in awe after the game, still savoring Holliday's historic home run.

Before the game Fox 2 Sports reporter Zac Choate talked with Mozeliak and Matheny about Holliday's Cardinals career possibly coming to an end soon.
