AFFTON, MO (KTVI) - First responders received a moving show of support Thursday night. Hundreds of people attended a spur of the moment vigil honoring the memory of slain St. Louis County Police Officer Blake Snyder.
Snyder, 33, was killed while responding to a disturbance call Thursday morning. He leaves behind a wife and young child.
The vigil was moved from the Affton precinct to the athletic field at Affton High School because the field offered more space.
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar addressed bleachers filled with police supporters by asking them to pivot from sadness to supporting the family of Officer Snyder. He said the support will definitely help officers do their job.
“We may not know them, but we all bleed blue,” said vigil organizer Jan LaVar. “We support our police.”
She believes first responders do not receive enough recognition for what they do.
“They need to know that we’re there, and they need to know that no matter what we’re going to be there to support them,” LaVar said.
