‘Extreme vegan’ mother arrested, accused of feeding baby only fruit and nuts

UNIONTOWN, Pa. — A woman “obsessed” with her vegan diet is accused of feeding her baby only fruit and nuts. KDKA reports that Elizabeth Hawk, 33, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child for not giving her son enough food.

The baby’s aunt says he showed physical problems that concerned her. He had a severe rash. But there was something else that bothered her too.

“It was his motor skills; he couldn’t use his hands at all.” Brandy Hawk tells KDKA.

The boy’s mother, Elizabeth, told Brandy that it was nothing to worry about. Brandy says her sister-in-law blamed it on “allergies.”

Brandy didn’t believe her and neither did the father. Jerry Hawk brought the 11-month-old to a hospital. He told them that his estranged wife was “obsessed” with a strict diet. The little boy’s doctor said not treating the rash was “inhumane,” and that his development is delayed due to malnourishment.

The boy’s father currently has custody of the baby and says his condition is improving. The couple’s other two children are also with the father now. Family members say the baby’s condition is improving.

Elizabeth Hawk remains free on her own recognizance. There’s no word on when she’ll appear in court for a preliminary hearing.
