Domino’s stores in south St. Louis County reminding pizza lovers about smoke detector safety

SOUTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – Five Domino’s Pizza stores are providing an incentive to people to make sure they have operating smoke detectors…free pizza.  The program is in honor of Fire Prevention Week.

So here’s the deal.  On delivery orders selected at random, Mehlville Fire Protection firefighters are arriving with Domino’s delivery drivers.  If the smoke detectors inside the customer’s home work, the pizza is free.  If the smoke detectors don’t work, firefighters will either replace the smoke detectors, or replace the batteries.

“Just safety for customers,” said Christina Hooker, manager of a Domino`s Pizza store on Telegraph Road.  “Making sure everybody is doing what they're supposed to.  And trying to protect them.”

Assistant Fire Chief Dan LaFata explained why Mehlville Fire Protection officials decided to get involved with the program.

“Statistics show that 3 out of 5 deaths that occur in homes from fire occur in homes that don't have operating smoke alarms,” said LaFata.  “And we want to eliminate that number all together.”

So Monday afternoon, when David Forbes ordered pizza on line, little did he know the fire department would show up?

But they did.

And his smoke detector worked, so the sausage and black olive pizza he ordered was free.

“I think it's a great idea,” said Forbes.  “I was fortunate enough that I just bought a smoke alarm 2-3 weeks ago.”
