ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le is a new Lifetime movie that tells another side the film, Straight Outta Compton. The made for TV biopic highlights R& B singer Michel'le's relationships with famed rapper/ producer Dr. Dre and Marion "Suge" Knight.
She along with actress Rhyon Nicole Brown, who portrays her character, joined us via satellite to discuss their biggest challenges while filming.
Michel'le says Dr. Dre did not want to tell her story. "Straight Outta Compton made $600 million. Dr. Dre chose to not put my character in it."
That's when she says Think Factory asked if she wanted to share her side of the story. "Lifetime said let's do it and it was just that simple," said the singer.
Re-living it was one of the most challenging parts for the singer.
Rhyon Nicole Brown says the movie highlights abuse, a lot of trials and lots of triumph. "My life growing up was very different from Michel'le's. I had to really study her as a woman, but as a human being."
Brown says she had to transform her mind to think the way that Michel'le thought; to think that abuse was normal.
"I couldn't have asked for a better role or a person to play. So it's been a phenomenal experience for me."
Although the movie puts emphasis on abuse, there are a lot of trials and triumphs.
Michel'le wants her fans to know that abuse is not love. "The first slap should be the last slap."
She wants men and women-alike to watch the film, enjoy it and take away strength.
"Mental and physical scars may be there but you should never give up."
Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le is scheduled to premiere on Saturday, October 15th at 8 pm ET/PT.
