LAKE ST. LOUIS, Mo. (AP) _ Police in the St. Louis suburb of Lake St. Louis are investigating after a homeowner shot and killed a suspected car thief.

The shooting happened about 1 a.m. Friday. Names have not been released.

Police say a resident heard his car alarm and went outside, where he says he confronted a man trying to steal his 2009 Volkswagen Passat. The homeowner was not hurt.

Officers found the Passat about a block away, where it had struck a home. The suspect was inside the car and pronounced dead at the scene. The home was not damaged.

It was the second time this week would-be thieves were fatally shot by St. Louis-area homeowners. On Tuesday, a 73-year-old St. Louis man killed two armed intruders who demanded his pickup truck.
