CHICAGO (AP) _ Authorities say an inmate was hospitalized in critical condition after an early-morning fire in a cell at the Cook County Jail.

Crews responded about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday to the fire at a portion of the jail that houses inmates with a maximum security classification. The Chicago Fire Department says the 25-year-old man had burns and a stab wound that appeared to be self-inflicted.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which may have been intentionally set. The cause of the fire is under investigation along with the circumstances of the stabbing.
