ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- Holiday lights are festive and can help get you into the spirit of the season but installing them can be dangerous if you’re not careful.
Kyle Hunsberger, Director of Construction for Habitat for Humanity and Dave Roth, Business Representative for IBEW Local 1 share the proper ways to stay safe.
Tips for hanging holiday lights from the Electrical Connection and Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis:
Ladder safety – never use an aluminum ladder around any power lines in the air that are attached to your home
Roof safety – be aware of white frost in the morning – wear a body harness or rent a lift
Extension cord safety – use the proper wire size cord for the outlet you are plugging into at the house (most likely 15 or 20 amp rated)
Ground fault interrupter safety – a gfi receptacle should be used on all outlets providing power to your holiday lights
