ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Homicide detectives with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department are investigating an apparent targeted shooting that left one man dead on Interstate 55 in south city.
The shooting took place around 12:30 p.m. near the Arsenal exit in the southbound lanes of the interstate.
Authorities said the victim, an African-American man in his late 20s, was shot while driving a black truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was traveling alone at the time and tried to avoid his assailants.
According to witness statements, the victim was targeted, a police spokesperson said. The shooter was in the backseat of the suspect vehicle. It's unclear if the victim fired back.
Police have not determined exactly how many shots were fired in the attack.
The highway was closed in the area while police collected ballistic evidence. The interstate was reopened to traffic by 2:30 p.m.
