Local man owns rare Newsweek issue with ‘Madam President’ cover

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – A keen eye on election night led to a quirky find for Peter Rexford.

“This is basically what I found on the shelf at Schnucks,” says Peter Rexford, a syndicated columnist.

The item in question: a Newsweek magazine with ‘Madam President’ as the headline and Hillary Clinton’s picture on the cover.

Rexford fancies himself a collector of unique items, but this presidential faux pas caught his attention.

“Because this originally was going for $10,000 on eBay,” Rexford said. “Now it’s down to between $500 and $2,000 or $3,000. I took a look inside and the copy was talking about how she had broken through the glass ceiling and she was now the first woman President of the United States.”

According to Rexford, the Newsweek magazines were not supposed to be distributed until the election winner was announced.

The magazine distributor, Topix Media, also published the special editions and has since pulled all copies from store shelves.
