Dissolving Belleville Township could cost taxpayers even more

BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) - City Clerk Dallas Cook says the decision to dissolve the Belleville Township that was supposed to save taxpayers money. But, it will end up costing you more.

Cook led the charge to get Township Trustees to put themselves out of business. They agreed to take over the duty of dispensing assistance checks to about 40 people; which was the only job the township has.

Cook says Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert set up a task force to recommend the best setup for the take-over. Cook says one of the recommendations involves raising taxes.

FOX 2's Elliott Davis caught up with Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert. He says that he doesn't think the costs will go up; but he can't guarantee anything.

Cook says he's going to be a candidate for Mayor against Mayor Eckert.
