TROY, MO (KTVI) - It`s a Wednesday morning parishioners at the St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Troy didn`t expect. When they arrived at around 6 am this morning they discovered that someone broke into the church and stole more than $5,000 in church goods. Members say they arrived within minutes of the thieves leaving. Pastor Bill O’Neal says its disheartening to see people commit this type of crime. Especially with Christmas services right around the corner.
'I felt really bad for our band director because it was his pianos that were taken and our kitchen director that was her personal laptop." said O'Neal
Church members also say the thieves tried to take a refrigerator and ate some food. They also got away through a back door with stage lights, a laptop, DVD players, a wireless headset and guitars and keyboards. At this point detectives at the Lincoln County Sheriff`s Office are investigating and following up on leads in the case.
'I don`t know how we are going to replace this or even if we can. I really want to talk to the people who did this to tell them there is a better way. They have to be incredibly broken to steal from a church.' he said
