ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - A pickup truck crashed into the River Des Peres near I-44 in Shrewsbury Wednesday morning.  Police say that a 55-year-old man died in the accident.

The 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 was speeding the wrong way down eastbound Picadilly at Ellenwood at around 8 a.m. That street is a one-way road. The truck then passed another car on Ellendale, went through a construction zone, and flew into the air.

The truck landed on a retaining wall on the east side of the River Des Peres.  The vehicle then rolled backwards, tilting onto its passenger side in the river.  That is when the Dodge Ram caught on fire.

Police say the driver was taken to the hospital and declared deceased.  He has been identified as  Mark Soest of the 7700 block of Jerome Ave.

The accident is still under investigation.
