Two officers injured after suspect strikes vehicle in south St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - A man trying to escape arrest crashed into an unmarked police car and injured two St. Louis City police officers around 11:15am Friday. The accident happened near Morganford Road and Fyler Avenue, just south of Tower Grove Park.

The two officers were transported to Barnes Jewish Hospital for observation after sustaining head, neck and back injuries. The officers are currently listed in stable condition.

Police were conducting an undercover investigation when officers tried to arrest the suspect. That male suspect fled from police. Police then put out devices to pop the man’s tires, however the suspect continued to flee. A helicopter was able to track down the suspect.

While the male was fleeing, he hit the unmarked police car and injured the officers. At the time of the crash, the officers had their lights and sirens on and activated.

“A lot of police sirens going on and the helicopter was flying low overhead and it hovered there quite a bit, so I knew there was major activity. A lot of police officers. They had it under control and they had everything taped off. This here, with all of the vehicles involved it was crazy. You don’t really see anything this major in the neighborhood,” said Michael Cox, a resident who lives in the area where the crash occurred.

The suspect was not seriously injured. The police say they found two guns and what appeared to be drugs in the suspect’s car.

This is an ongoing investigation.
