Child accidentally shoots self; police investigating

ST. LOUIS - For the second time in less than a week, St. Louis police were called to investigate an accidental shooting involving a child.

According to Schron Jackson, a police spokeswoman, the incident occurred just before 4 p.m. in the 4600 block of Pope Avenue in the O'Fallons Park neighborhood.

A 4-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the hand and mouth, according to police. The child was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where he's listed in critical condition.

The investigation remains ongoing, Jackson said.

“It happens a lot and it’s terrible,” said Veronica Collins, who lives a few doors down from where the child was shot.

A 2-year-old accidentally shot and killed his father Saturday in St. Louis. Police said the father was sleeping while the child was playing with the gun on a bed.

“These families are never going to recover,” said Lise Bernstein, president of Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice.

Her organization raises money to purchase cable gun locks and gives them away at community events.

“Unintentional shootings are 100% preventable when guns are securely stored,” she said.

The organization has a video showing how to use a gun lock.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b_k3CX2UBQ&rel=0

“We encourage people to use either a gun safe or a cable gun lock because when those devices are used there’s no way the gun operates,” Bernstein said.
