Police investigate suspicious Webster Groves home explosion and fire

WEBSTER GROVES, MO — An explosion and fire guts a Webster Groves home overnight. This morning an investigation is underway to find out what exactly happened. The damage is extensive to the home on East Allison not far from Elm.

St. Louis County police confirm that bomb and arson investigators have been called in to help with the case. Earlier, we were told that authorities believe some kind of device may have gone off. Webster Groves Police are still securing the area.

The Assistant Chief of the Webster Groves Fire Department, Gary Bainter, says the call came in for an explosion and fire at the home just before 11:45pm last night. Bainter says when crews got here fire was already raging with flames shooting through the roof. That`s when the call went out for a second alarm bringing more fire units to the scene.

Bainter says, fortunately, the people who live at the house weren`t home when all of this happened. No injuries are being reported.

Bainter says the back part of the home sustained the worst damage. Neighbors say they heard a loud explosion, called 911 and did what they could to try and make sure everyone was alright. Bainter tells us at this point an exact cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation.

Bainter says a family of five including children lived in the home. The family apparently told police that they had just returned from being out of town and were out running errands when the incident happened. We are being told that more details about this case might be released by Webster Groves Police as the day unfolds.
