(KTVI - FOX2now.com) — A group of people are mailing viruses across the Country in order to infect their own children. It seems to be a growing network of people, who don't believe in traditional immunizations. Investigator Chris Hayes shows you how the parents are trying to evade the law while spreading disease.
The facebook page is called 'Find a Pox Party In Your Area.' Members describe how to spread infections through U.S. Mail. Moms talk about swapping spit through lolli pops and bodily fluids using Q-Tips, then placing them in Ziplock bags and mailing them.
Most people are looking for Chicken Pox, but requests include Whooping Cough, Shingles, Measles and Rubella.
Cardinal Glennon Pediatrician Ken Haller said the practice could turn fatal.
Haller said, "Because most people haven't seen these outbreaks, most people don't know how bad they really are. Vaccines are a victim of their own success."
The group appears to be founded on a fear of immunizations, which Dr. Haller says doctors have tried to fight for decades.
He said, "Ever since the dawn of vaccines, two centuries ago, people have just thought of this as a weird thing to do. 'What are you injecting me with?' You know people have these fears and we have that on a core level. But the thing is, these are just myths."
U.S. Postal Inspector Dan Taylor said the practice is not complicated in the eyes of the law.
He said "Imagine the scenario of Chicken Pox being mailed, handled by a pregnant postal worker. There are very serious implications and for that reason, we're taking it very seriously."
The group knows it's illegal. One woman posted "Don't put anything on it identifying it as Pox." Another person instructs "Wrap it like a gift."
Pox parties have been around for decades. The new aspect includes using 'social media' and the U.S. Mail. Several parents on the site agreed to talk to me at one point, then backed out. We would like to follow up with a parent in this group, so if you're willing to defend infecting your kid to avoid immunizations, contact me on my facebook page.
