The Missouri State Highway Patrol and MoDOT announced a 5 percent decrease in traffic fatalities in 2011 when compared to 2010. Crash fatalities totaled 773 for 2011 compared to 821 in 2010. It is the first year since 1949 that Missouri has experienced less than 800 fatalities.

MoDOT officials say drivers are more attentive and drive more defensively than ever before. They also credit state laws about cell phone use and the wearing of seat belts.

This is the sixth straight year traffic fatality totals have dropped.
