ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- It was a night of agony and ecstasy for St. Louis area basketball fans who found March Madness, to be simply maddening. There was the major downer of Mizzou suffering an historic upset loss. Then came the excitement of St. Louis University winning in the big dance for the first time in years.
SLU fans were jumping for joy after the Billikens improbable win over trendy Final Four pick Memphis.
“I knew it was gonna happen while I was here because we believe!” SLU fan Thomas Ray shouted over the screaming crowd. “Our school believes! Mizzou couldn`t do it! St. Louis did it!”
His excitement came just a couple of hours after Mizzou fell to Norfolk State. Only four times in the history of the tournament had a #2 seed lost to a #15. (It happened again three hours later to Duke.)
“It’s easy to cancel Christmas but now the Easter Bunny won’t be here either,” Mizzou fan Chuck Price said. Asked if he could bear to watch the rest of the tournament he said, “It’s gonna be hard. I’m gonna watch Fox 2.”
