ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Three St. Louis firefighters are recovering after a staircase collapsed beneath them while checking on a missing man.  They arrived to find him either dead or very close, but they ended up being the ones in need of help.

It happened at a building on North Grand, not far from Fairgrounds Park.  Firefighters were assisting a man in what is described as some sort of cardiac arrest, and as they climbed the stairs to the porch where he was lying unresponsive, the steps gave way.

All three firefighters were taken to area hospitals, and have been treated and released.

The patient was pronounced dead at the scene.
