ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- Every hour in Missouri one child is abused or neglected. One St. Louis organization is on a mission to change that statistic.

April is actually National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Locally, the St. Louis Crisis Nursery wants to use this month to spread the word about its prevention program and that it does work.

Crisis Nursery has 5 locations throughout the metro area, two in St. Charles, one in St. Louis, one in North St. Louis County and one in Wentzville.

Every year more than 7,200 children find a safe-haven at one of those locations.

Now the nursery says traditionally when the weather heats up so does the stress level for some parents. And with a warmer than usual spring the staff says it’s already seeing an increase in phone calls.

The staff at the nursery wants parents to know, don't be afraid to ask for help.

Last year 6,000 families in crisis called the Crisis Nursery 24 hour helpline.

The calls included everything from a young mother of two with suicidal feelings, to an overwhelmed mom who just had a death in family.
