RED BUD, IL (KTVI) -We still have no idea who bought one of three winning Mega Millions Lottery tickets in Illinois. But, we know the Moto Mart on Main Street in Red Bud, Illinois sold it. The employees got a chunk of that cash Thursday.
Michael Jones is the Illinois Lottery Superintendent. After a week, he still seems awestruck that part of the biggest jackpot in history is coming to his state.
"I mean, it's totally random. It's totally luck," he pointed out. "If you think of all the tens of millions of people in all the tens of thousands of cities and towns in the United States that one of the three winners is from Red Bud, Illinois is just a fantastic story and a wonderful example of what the lottery is all about."
Jones later handed the owners a half-million-dollar check. It is standard operating procedure for a state lottery commission to give a piece of the jackpot to the store that sold the winning ticket. The owners then handed a $50,000 check to the store's nine employees.
Customers came, not just to buy gas, but to see cashiers they considered to be more like family get the prize. Manager Denise Metzger was in tears.
"They're just a great group of people," she said of her team. "And, I am just so thankful that I get a chance to work with them. On the bright side, this has been a great ride you guys. And, I'd like to see it happen again."
Co-owner Robert Forsyth invited every person standing in front of the Moto Mart, including the media, out for a drink at a bar nicknamed "The Office". He was buying.
