(KTVI)-- Say the word "free" and you`ll get people`s attention. Say the words "free trees," and you`ll get a line, especially at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

To celebrate Arbor Day, the garden gives away hundreds of saplings to visitors every year on that occasion.

This year, they had 600 saplings from five native species to give away, and it didn`t take long.

Visitor Pat Grace picked up a Dogwood.

'Hopefully we will have good luck, they look nice and healthy, they`ve got good root systems, so they look good,' she said.

'You are not going to see results immediately. It will take a little while, but that is part of why people are gardeners, they like to watch things grow over time,' said Glenn Kopp of the Kemper Center for Home Gardening, at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

'We want to encourage people to plant trees, we need trees, a lot of people are cutting down trees, new subdivisions are built and they cut all the trees that are there, so it is important we always plant new trees,' Kopp said.

Meanwhile, at Habitat for Humanity`s ReStore at 3763 of Forest Park Ave., they are offering free tulips to the public on Saturday.

This is the sixth year the ReStore has offered free bulbs donated by THF Brickman, which digs them up every spring at their 15 local shopping centers to make way for summer flowers.

'Usually within the first couple of hours most of them gone,' said Josh Vaughn, manager of the ReStore. 'I`d say get here early, bring some gloves, bring some bags, and bring some change for the parking meters because parking tends to be an issue,' he said.

The tulip giveaway is first come first served, and it begins at 7:00 a.m. Saturday.
