EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KTVI) - Threats of violence shut down several businesses in East St. Louis overnight Tuesday. This time, night clubs and bars were not the only ones involved.

East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks visited several businesses in the Edgemont neighborhood and asked them to close.

The request came after a group of thugs were making threats to retaliate for a shooting in East St. Louis on Tuesday.  A business owner, who did not want to be identified, said the mayor was worried that he did not have enough police officers on the streets to protect the businesses.

The business owner says many of the businesses between 59th Street to 89th Street were also shut down. The closings are indefinite for now. The business owner says has to reopen Wednesday night because he can not afford to stay closed again.
