FREEBURG, IL (KTVI)-- Smoke could be seen for miles form a barn fire in the Freeburg area on Wednesday night.  Corky Helms owns long horn cattle but they were all okay.  Lost in the fire was expensive horse training equipment for an upcoming rodeo and farm machinery.

The fire was on Turkey Hill Lane.  The barn sits behind the Maple Hill subdivision located on the edge of the Belleville city limits.

"We were in the house and hear something booming," said Helms. "I ran outside and the barn was on fire."

Neighbors say it didn`t take long for the barn to go up in flames.  Six different fire departments responded but the nearest fire hydrant was approximately 1,000 feet away.

Helms was emotional over seeing his barn go up in flames but wanted everyone to know his cattle were fine and his family is okay.

"We can replace what`s in that barn and if we can`t then we probably didn`t need it anyway," said Helms.  With a tear in his eye he said, "We`re in great shape."

Firefighters also had to contend with piles of hay inside the barn that made putting out the fire difficult.
