ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) - St. Louis County Police are calling the death of 21-month-old Kourtney Straughan a tragic accident.

The girl`s mother had just unbuckled her from a cars seat when the little girl darted out into the parking lot of the medical center they were visiting on Wednesday afternoon.

The Esse Medical Building is located near Tesson Ferry and Wells Rd.

'She darted from the car, ran to traffic and was truck by a vehicle,' said Sgt. James McWilliams, St. Louis County Police Department.

Police say the driver of the Acura SUV that struck the girl is a doctor who works at the medical building.

'He tried administering first aid,' said McWilliams.  'But it was too late.'

McWilliams said the child was 21-months old.

An accident reconstruction team and detectives from the crimes against persons unit were on the scene investigating but police say at this point there is no other evidence suggesting anything other than a tragic accident.

David E Hartenbach, MD and chairman of Esse Health released the following statement, 'This family is well-known to us and we feel as if a member of our own family has been lost today.  Our prayers go out to this family in this very difficult time.'

Police say this tragic accident is a reminder to all parents how small children can dart into danger in just a split second.
