ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Major Lonnel Richardson, Division Commander at the Salvation Army brought boxes of donuts to celebrate Donut Day, Friday, June 1st.   Schnucks is selling a special commemorative box of glazed donuts at local stores while supplies last.  The box costs $3.99 with $0.50 of every box sold benefiting The Salvation Army.

Salvation Army volunteers will be collecting cash donations at three area Dunkin' Donuts on Friday with donors receiving a coupon for a FREE donut.

To raise funds during the Great Depression, The Salvation Army began honoring its World War I volunteers and “doughnut lassies,” on the first “National Doughnut Day” in 1938. The doughnut lassies came up with the idea of frying doughnuts in soldiers’ helmets near the front lines as a quick treat. The donuts became an instant hit that was brought back to America by returning “doughboys.”

Each year, the first Friday in June marks this important date in American food history and raises awareness for the critical services The Salvation Army provides to those in need each day. Though that war has long since passed, The Salvation Army continues to care and comfort for nearly 350,000 people throughout Missouri and Southern Illinois each year.

By supporting Donut Day, it assists The Salvation Army in one of their most difficult seasons – the summer months, as they experience a lull in donations, but continues to provide food pantry, cooling centers, senior citizen feeding programs, disaster services and other programs.

Participating Dunkin’ Donuts stores are located in Florissant, Rock Hill, Kirkwood and Troy.
