ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- It was been a long strange trip for comedian Dean Schardan.
He enjoys the spotlight of the stage better than the press clips he got in 1999. He made local headlines when he arrested for robbing four banks in the area.
"I'm going to rob this bank and if I get caught I will just have a shoot out in the street and it would be all over. I just didn't care," said Schardan.
After his fourth bank robbery he was finally caught. He would spend nearly a decade behind bars for the robberies.
"When I got out I knew I had to change. I'm not a mean or tough guy. I need to be the person I was since I was a kid. The guy that can make people laugh," said Schardan.
The ex-bank robber could make an audience laugh and soon was appearing at shows across the country.
With his new found success he was still living with the guilt of his past. He wanted to share his good fortune with those that could use some help. So he would make donations or volunteer at local charities on the road.
Now a TV reality show is in the works about Dean's way of paying it forward.
"Even though I burnt all those bridges. You can always rebuild them and move forward. That's what this show is all about," says Schardan.
