CALIFORNIA, Mo. (AP) -The former treasurer of a mid-Missouri
group that organizes youth sports has been charged in the
disappearance of more than $65,000. The Jefferson City News-Tribune  reported
that felony charges were filed Wednesday against 47-year-old Janet L. Fitzwater, of the Missouri town of California. No attorney is listed for her in online court records.
The former treasurer of the California Recreation Association is charged in Moniteau County Circuit Court with stealing more than $25,000 and five counts of forgery. The nonprofit association provides youth sports activities, including T-ball, softball, baseball, soccer, basketball and swimming. The group contacted the sheriff after reviewing five years of records and discovering that some of the checks appeared to have forged signatures.
