IMPERIAL, MO (KTVI)- The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney charged a 54-year old man on Saturday with the murder of his wife.  Matthew McDonough is being held on a half million dollar cash only bond.  Jefferson County Sheriff deputies found the body of 38-year old Deborah McDonough in a bedroom in the couple's home near Imperial Friday night.

Authorities are waiting for autopsy results to identify the cause of death.  McDonough is currently charged with second degree murder.

Neighbors told police the couple had been separated for less than two weeks.  They lived in a home in the 100 block of Harvest Grove near Imperial.

The woman's mother called a neighbor and asked her to check on the family Friday evening when she failed to reach her daughter.  "The neighbors went down there and made contact with the children, escorted them from the home," said Capt. Ron Arnhart of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.   Neighbors said the couple had a 13-year old daughter and an 11-year old son.  They were unharmed.

Sheriff deputies searched the home and found Matthew McDonough in the basement.  "He had what appeared to be self-inflicted lacerations to his person.  Emergency medical personnel came in, treated him there at the scene and then transported him to an area hospital for further treatment.  The suspect was then turned over to sheriff deputies and taken to the Jefferson County Jail.

Arnhart said the couple had spent time together Friday with their children.
