Former Madison Co. Sheriff Churchich Dies

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) – A former longtime southwestern Illinois sheriff has died.

Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn says retired Madison County Sheriff Bob Churchich was 83 when he died Tuesday at an Edwardsville hospice after battling bladder cancer. Churchich retired in 2002 after serving 16 years, having begun his law enforcement career in 1958 as an Alton police officer. Before becoming sheriff, he was Hartford’s police chief for more
than six years.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
