ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - St. Louis police are investigating a troubling story out of South city.  A homeless man says someone threw gasoline on him and then set him on fire while he was sleeping.

Police say the 40 year old victim is in critical, but stable condition at a local hospital.  The incident allegedly happened in an alley on Illinois near Interstate 55.  A garage was destroyed and so was a car inside of it.  The homeless man says he was sleeping behind the garage when the attack happened.

Police say the victim was able to flag down a passerby after he was set on fire. That passerby took the homeless man to a hospital where authorities were called.

Investigators say the victim is being transferred to a St. Louis County hospital for further treatment.  The St. Louis City police bomb and arson unit has been called in to investigate.  Police say the victim is speaking with investigators but has not been able to provide any additional information. No one is in custody at this time.
