QUINCY, Ill. (AP) – A western Illinois judge has found a Quincy woman guilty in a deadly boat collision on the Mississippi River.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reportsĀ  Judge Chet Vahle fined 30-year-old Carol O’Connell more than $200 on Thursday. O’Connell was found guilty of careless operation of a watercraft during a bench trial. She waived her right to a jury trial.

Illinois Conservation Police say 29-year-old John Flaiz of Quincy died in August 2011 when the boat O’Connell was operating struck Flaiz’s boat from behind. Flaiz’s boat sank and his body was never recovered.

Investigators found the primary cause of the crash was that Flaiz’s boat did not display a stern navigation light.
