Joe Kelly pitched five and two thirds innings in relief and gave up just one run. Cardinals pitchers struck out 19 Pirates in this marathon game, which was the longest in the Major Leagues this season.
The Pirates Pedro Alvarez broke a 3-3 tie with his 23rd home run of the season to make it a 4-3 game. Barret Browning allowed two more runs in the 19th inning and suffered the loss. Pittsburgh now leads the Cardinals by two games in the NL Wild Card race. The Reds lead the Cardinals by eight and a half games in the race for the NL Central Division.
