CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) _ James Samons planned to ride along in a small plane and write a newspaper column about the experience. He got a lot more excitement than he bargained for.

Samons, the entertainment reporter for the Southeast Missourian in Cape Girardeau, was riding with pilot John Ellis Thursday when Ellis’ small plane crash-landed at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport. Both men escaped with minor injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause.

The Southeast Missourian (http://bit.ly/RP68mV ) reports that Samons was released from a hospital later Thursday. Ellis did not return messages seeking comment.

Southeast Missourian photographer Laura Simon was on the ground and captured video of the accident. The video can be seen on the newspaper website, http://www.semissourian.com.
