ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- St. Louis police say a new anti crime initiative implemented last month not only works, but it works very well.

The ''homicide deterrence initiative'' was launched in response to a dramatic increase in aggravated assault cases.

About 100 police officers were switched from dayside to night side. They set up checkpoints and patrolled a dozen communities including the Central West End and the central corridor downtown.

They say the strategy greatly reduced the number of targeted crimes in the area including homicides.
