(KTVI) - A car crashed into a utility pole overnight shutting off the power to thousands of home and businesses. Drivers also had no street lights or traffic signals, so Ameren scrambled to get the power back on.

St. Louis County got a call for help just after 12:30 a.m. Friday. Mehlville fire crews found a small sedan crashed into a huge power pole.  That pole almost broke off at the base, but it kept standing.

The car had to be towed away and that is when Ameren crews rushed in. About 2,200 homes and businesses in Mehlville and Oakville were in the dark. Police also put out stop signs to keep drivers safe.

Police say everyone was fine in the car and it looks like it was just an accident. They do not believe alcohol was involve. As for Ameren customers, almost each and every one got power back just after 2:00 a.m.

The street lights and traffic lights are back on.
