MARION, Ill. (AP) _ Federal investigators are investigating reports of funds missing from a southern Illinois city’s water department.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (http://bit.ly/PTJLhN) reports that Marion police referred the matter to the FBI because of the case’s complexity.

The newspaper reports that the city began investigating its water department in May after the city council was made aware of unusual transactions.

Mayor Bob Butler says the city completed its audit and investigation of water department records and turned the findings over to the Williams County state’s attorney.

Butler calls the missing funds significant, but he isn’t being more specific.

Williamson County’s state’s attorney isn’t commenting.
