BELLEVILLE, IL – A Cahokia, IL man was sentenced to 53 years in prison Tuesday for the 2009 murder of a Centreville Police Officer.  Lemuel A. Houston, 25, is not eligible for parole. He was convicted of shooting Officer Greg Jonas multiple times in the head and neck during in the 4700 block of Piggot on June 2, 2009.

Back in July 2012, Houston entered a plea of guilty but mentally ill to one count of first degree murder meaning that at the time of the crime, the defendant was suffering from a mental illness, but that he was not insane and thus was not relieved of criminal responsibility. Houston was eventually found to be fit to stand trial with special provisions. Precautions were taken during the proceedings to accommodate the illness.
