BARTELSO, IL (KTVI) - Tragedy struck in Clinton County, Illinois overnight when a firefighter was killed after he was hit by his own department's fire truck.   It happened in the small, rural town of Bartelso about 40 miles east of St. Louis.

It involved the Santa Fe Fire Protection District on Highway 161. Timothy Jansen, 45, worked for that department.   The fire started around 7:45 p.m. Sunday.  Authorities say Jansen was responding to a fire at a house on River Road.

Investigators aren't releasing many detail about how Jansen was killed.  They will only say that he was in the line of duty while fighting the fire.  No one else was hurt in the blaze.  Authorities say the home that burned was basically a clubhouse, like a weekend resort home.

The Clinton County Sheriff's Department is investigating the fire.
