The Cardinals fortified their bench for the 2013 season by signing veteran infielder Ty Wigginton. The 35 year old has played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues, last season playing for the Phillies. Wigginton has hit 15 or more home runs in six of his 11 big league seasons. Wigginton has a career batting average of .263 with 169 home runs.

The Cardinals will be Wigginton’s eighth Major League team. He has played for the Mets, Pirates, Rays, Astros, Orioles, Rockies and Phillies. Wigginton gets a two year deal with the Cardinals paying him $2.5 million in each season. Wigginton will be the Cardinals top right handed pinch hitter and also play 1st base and 3rd base when Allen Craig and David Freese need a day off.
